Ngamba Chimpanzee Island on Lake Victoria

Spend a half a day, a full day or even stay overnight on the island with the chimpanzees.

This island is a chimpanzee sanctuary for orphaned chimpanzees and you have the closest contact possible. All kinds of arrangements can be made to facilitate your needs for this day or overnight safari and boat trip to Ngamba Island. You can combine this with a day at Entebbe and even stay overnight at a beach front hotel at Entebbe where you can have dinner on the shores of the largest lake in Africa, Lake Victoria and then visit Entebbe Botanical Gardens, Uganda Wildlife Game Preserve and Entebbe town, the first capital of Uganda under he colonial rule of Great Britain.

Ngamba Island – sanctuary for chimpanzees.Drive just 45 minutes from Kampala toward the equator and take either a speed-boat or regular motor boat to Ngamba Island which is just 23 kilometers out of Entebbe. Be greeted by a courteous staff on the Island and spend the day with chimpanzees on their own island in the midst of Lake Victoria.

There are a lot of opportunities to be with the chimpanzees, even as they are fed. You can spend a half day to a full day and now there are even overnight facilities allowing you to remain overnight.

You can also choose to return to Kampala or stay overnight in the old capital of Uganda, Entebbe. A town of 95,000 but you would never know it as you walk on the main street of this African town.

The island is sanctuary to orphaned chimps that in many cases were captured at the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo as smugglers attempted to smuggle them to buyers in Uganda or beyond. Also abandoned chimps, or in cases where a mother died or was shot by poachers.

It is a worthwhile project that helps the animals and puts you into touch with the chimpanzees in a natural setting. The Island was uninhabited and provides the perfect place for the orphaned chimps.

Kibale Forest Chimpanzee Safari and Bigodi Wetland Swamp Sanctuary

Travelers are always surprised by what awaits them as they visit this region of Kibale Forest, Kasenda Crater Lakes – from the accommodations found there to the many activities that awaits the safari traveler ranging from the superb chimpanzee tracking and bird watching, plus the largest concentration of primates in any forest in East Africa. There in Kibale Forest you can also come across buffaloes, hippos, forest elephants (smaller and hairier than the ones found on the savannas), giant forest hogs, hippos, warthogs, lions, leopards and 335 species of birds. The setting is Afro-montane and western Africa lowland forests.

Kibale Forests offers a great diversity, and yet most visitors come to see the chimpanzees, not realizing all the other natural wonders they might encounter there. Besides all the mammals, birds and butterflies there are 351 species of trees and shrubs. Kibale Forest National Park is simply a most fabulous place.

A two night – three day Safari that can be conducted independent of other parks or combined with Uganda national parks such as Queen Elizabeth and or Bwindi Impenetrable Forest with its Mountain Gorillas, which of course depends upon the travelers wishes and time and budget capabilities.

Day One: Leave Kampala early for your exciting Kibale Forest National Park and Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Safari, we move on toward Kibale Forest via Mubende where we have lunch, and then proceed to Kibale Forest where we check in nearby at upscale or budget lodging toward evening (getting here is about 7 hours, but takes in some of most beautiful scenery along the way. At the destination it will be time for relaxation and dinner time with some quiet relaxation and rest for the evening.

Day Two: Enjoy your breakfast and get ready for a walk in Kibale Forest after a short ride to the Kibali Forest entrance. With your Uganda Wildlife Authority Guide you will be able to enjoy viewing animals, birds, plants and trees that you would miss otherwise.

Of course you are tracking chimpanzees and the chance of seeing them there is over 90%, since they are on the move from one place to another he knows where they have been the night before and will be able guide you near them for optimum viewing.

You return to your place of lodging for a delightful lunch and some rest, then off to Bigodi Wetlands Swamp for a walk around and see both mammals and birds in their setting. This walk is almost as popular as the Kibale Forest Walk. You will need good walking shoes since part of the walk will be quite muddy, the situnga antelope and hopefully the shoebill stork. This is nothing to be missed. There is also an abundance of butterflies found here.

Back to the lodge for rest and refreshments and then off to a guided nightwalk with spotlights, from 7:30 pm to 8 pm in search of nocturnal primates such as the bushbaby and potto.

Dinner at your lodging and rest.

Day Three: After breakfast we depart for Kampala with a packed lunch and arrive during the late afternoon.

For the dedicated chimpanzee enthusiast or someone wanting field experience: There is the all day with the chimps experience, this can be done for up to three days. If this is something that interests you, let us know.
